If it is some sort of rich combustion situation, it can indicate imminent cat meltdown (bad = expensive). The P0430 code alone would tend to indicate a problem with the cat (manufacturing defect - which I would consider highly unlikely) or with the O2 sensor itself (or related wiring/connections) manufacturing or damage issue, which I would consider more likely.Įither way, having a knowledgeable dealer (good luck with that one) look at it as soon as it trips would be a good idea. Often, these would come along with other codes. So possible root causes include various types of combustion malfunction (which you should notice driveability and fuel economy wise) such as lean misfire, exhaust backfire, leaking injector causing overly rich mixture, etc. Too much O2 means too lean, Too little O2 means too rich. The O2 sensors look for too much or too little O2 in the in the exhaust exiting the cats. Note that Cat performance is monitored with the downstream O2 sensors.
